Charlotte Loop is not a true loop but an on street location to turn various streetcars routes, but mostly the 510 Spadina Line cars.
The 510 cars will turn east onto Adelaide Street who's tracks run easterly to Church Street in the east that are double track at this time, but the westbound tracks will be removed in the coming years as the tracks are rebuilt along with the road as the street is one way going east. There are no plans to convert this street back to two way traffic at this time.
The 510 cars will travel one block east and then turn south on Charlotte Street and travel one block south to King Street. The 510 or other routes using this section have a choice of either going east or west as this is how far Charlotte Street goes in the first place.
At the present time (2010), there is a 49 story condo been built at the foot of Charlotte Street on the west side that will have an impact on TTC operation once the new owners have move in 2012 trying to get their cars in and out of the condo.
At the same time, there are plans to build an 11 story condo at the top of Charlotte Street on the west side that will put more strain on this loop operation since TTC has the cars layover on Charlotte Street in the first place to the point you may see 2 or more cars laying over.
Once the 510 is to resume service, that is when the fun for it starts as it has to fight its way onto King Street as the traffic folks are unwilling to let it onto the street as well during to the congestion at Spadina Avenue in the first place. It can take 1 to 3 traffic lights if not more to travel that one block back to Spadina Avenue and turn north onto it cause by the traffic making turns in both direction and pedestrians flow.
As for Adelaide Street itself, it has not been used in years due to the fact that it tracks are cut and missing between Bay Street and Yonge Street caused by building an extension to the PATH system as well another of Office towers been built in that area. Once the recladding of First Canadian tower is completed in 2013, TTC is planning to rebuild the eastbound track and removed the westbound ones. In 2009, TTC rebuilt the tracks from Victoria Street to Church Street when Church Street was being rebuilt that saw the westbound track and switches removed.
You can see how Charlotte Loop came into existent. It is unclear at this time when the tracks were place on Charlotte Street and it could happen when TTC rebuilt the Spadina Line in the 1980's and open on June 22th, 1990, considering streetcars stop running on Spadina Avenue on February 26, 1966 when the Bloor-Danforth Subway open.
