Welcome to the TTC Long Branch Loop Page

The Long Branch Loop is located just east of Browns Line on the north side of Lake Shore Blvd W that that is about 400m from the boundary of the City of Mississauga today.

Before 1928, Toronto and Mimico Interurban reached the Etobicoke Creek and the current location of the loop back in 1895 from the Humber River using 4 ft 10 7/8 gauge.

In 1904, the Toronto and York Radial took over the Toronto and Mimico Interurban and extended the track westerly along the old highway 2 know known as Lakeshore Road to the Village of Port Credit located at the old highway 10, know known as Hurontario Street in 1905.

In 1922, the lines were change to standard gauge by Hydro Electric Power Commission of Ontario who took over the operation of the line.

In 1927, after the City of Toronto took over the lines as the Toronto Transportation Commission, the tracks were change back to the 4 ft 10 7/8 in gauge that exist today.

Duel end cars were used up to 1928 for the Humber to Long Branch route and were replace by single end Peter Witt cars when the loop open in 1928.

The loop was built in 1928 to service the single end cars that still exist today while seeing dual end cars operating to the Village of Port Credit on the south side of the shelter that still exist today. There is a 2nd track for passing or layover when the streetcars arrived at the loop.

On February 9, 1935, Interurban service to Port Credit was phased out by TTC and replace by TTC bus route 74.

In 1942, the line was extended to the small arms factory on the west side of Etobicoke Creek as well the south side of the Lake Shore Rd where it loop and remain in service until the end of the war. There is no real information or photos of this loop.

On February 8th, 1976, TTC turn over the 74 bus route to the newly form City of Mississauga that absorbed the Village of Port Credit as well a number of other towns and Villages. The new Transit System known as Mississauga Transit started to provide service along Lakeshore Rd to loop as Route 23E. It also started to provide service to the loop for the Dixie Road Route 5. Both routes still service the loop today. Mississauga Transit buses drop off and pickup riders next to the shelter in place of the Interurban car.

On May 23, 1967, a new Long Branch rail station open next to the loop for GO Transit service.

TTC Route 123 Shorncliffe and 110 Islington South also provides bus service to the loop today.

From 1928 to 1996, TTC operated their streetcar route 507 to the Humber River Loop. In 1996, TTC merge route 507 with the 501 that stills operates as 501 in 2010.

There are plans to reinstate the 507 again sometime in 2011 once construction is finish on Roncesvalles Ave to the Bloor Subway Dundas West Station.
